Wellness tips for your technology - what's going on with your business

Wellness tips for your technology

In 2020 the world learned the importance of self care and wellness. With the grey cloud of a global pandemic hanging over us all, the focus on both mental and physical well being was put to the forefront of every human’s mind. We reassessed behaviours, created new routines and baked and ate some pretty amazing banana bread! While wellness and mindfulness are not in any way a new concept, we were all forced to consider these concepts as a need rather than a nice to have.

With that in mind I started to think, what if businesses took the time to take on the same type of concepts. For a lot of businesses the pandemic has brought pause. And while this pause may be coming to an end, and for some there was no pause at all. (Hands up who would have loved to buy shares in a hand sanitizer company in 2019!) But regardless if your business has hit the pause button or the fast forward button, I think all can say for certainty that the way we do business has changed. So why not use that change and growth for the better and take some time to check in on your businesses internal systems just like we do for our minds and bodies.

Below are 3 ways in which you can check in and be mindful of what’s going on under the hood of your business’s technology.

Digital Detox

When people speak of a digital detox they normally mean to put down one of the multiple screens we look at all day and go on a walk or spend some time reading, but I do think this can have a relevance to business as well so bear with me while I make this point. While of course, we need the internet and our devices to be able to work, are we using too many systems, tools and modes of communication? Are we able to complete our work using maybe only 2 or 3 tools, rather than having 56 tabs open and no one knows where the music is coming from? What view do we have of our customers, is it saved locally on multiple folks’ laptops or is it easily accessible for the people who need to see it? Maybe for businesses it’s time to assess if we really need 4 ways of sending an email, or is there a single view we can have to run more efficiently as a business?

Set Intentions

During the pandemic I set some intentions. To get up every morning at the same time, have a cup of tea without spending too much time on my phone, and then take my dog on a walk. This seems so simple and for most people reading this must think how small these intentions are, but why do they need to be complicated? Businesses need to do the same kinds of things. Where do we want to be next year? How do we want our customers to feel when they interact with our brand/product/service? When was the last time your business did this? Was it when they first started up and wanted to make a mission statement, or is it an evolving thing. Like human beings, businesses can get lost in the fire fighting of the everyday. Maybe it’s time to take that step back and set those intentions as a business.

Involve others in your goals

If no man is an island, the same goes for most businesses! While historically most decisions regarding technology have been made solely by the tech teams, the technology is used by almost everyone in the business, so why keep the decision within the tech team? Speak with the boots on the ground and find out what works, what doesn’t work and what have you not considered because you don’t all use the system in the same way. Of course you need to keep this involvement of different business units to a reasonable size so as to not get too overwhelmed, but your internal users have valid and important things to say about how the technology they use is put together. And who knows, you might find out something you didn’t know about one of your business processes.

Thankfully the world is starting to get out from underneath the grey of the covid cloud and the sun is starting to shine through, in the UK we can even cautiously hug again! But while we all start to find our new versions of normal, take the time to see what needs to be a part of that normal and what can stay is the carefree-ness of 2019!
